A set of songs recorded in summer 2005
A plundering of cult pop. Songs about farmers, the Christian right as Satan, falling in love with trees, the illusion of achievement, and murder. Notes from Dan:
"I wrote Sycamore Tree purely becuase I liked the word and because it allowed for more punnery with willow trees (see also The Captain on the Jumble Sale album) but it turns out I was inadvertantly (coincidently? unconsiously?) tapping into a deep root of meaning. The Sycamore Tree is an ancient symbol of the creative spirit in Egypt and other cultures - so my nonsense lament about not finding a dress big enough for my adored plant, nor my ability to write poetry that pleased her, seem all the more resonant. So listen and Do the Symbolist!
On another note Gasp for Breath was being recorded the day of the July 7th bombs in London. Another odd coincident as this paranoid tale of city living seemed to perfectly reflect the mood of the city that day. After recording it I walked three miles from Brixton to Clerkenwell to meet friends who had convened in pub like it was some kind of Anderson Shelter. Science lied when it said things would get better. "
